The Buzz Of Life

Everybody knows that pumas purr just like little house lions do.
Berry and Bob were sitting by the fire warming themselves after a busy day of playing with Twigg. The flames danced, casting flashes of gentle illumination over them and the stones and the logs around the fire. Their noses were nearly touching, and their eyes were closed. The rumble or vibration of their purring was very audible to Ralph who was watching them in a meditative mood.
Ramona, done with most of her day’s tasks, sat down beside him on one of the nice smooth logs.
“You look like you are thinking deep thoughts,” she said. Little blond Cherry lay sleeping in the crook of her elbow, and Twigg was dozing by the puma bros.
“I was thinking about how many important things buzz, or hum. Maybe that’s the sound of being alive,” said Ralph. “Think about it, all kind of bugs do it. The wind makes things hum, too. Listen to those cats Ramona. I truly believe that it’s that buzz which is a sign of life.”
“I hear them, they’re making me sleepy,” and she yawned.
“I can’t even hear some of those vibrations, but I know they’re there. Things happen when I sing.  I can feel it even if I can’t hear it,” said sleepy Ralph.
“You mostly rumble. You don’t purr,” she laughed at the idea.
She didn’t want the children and cats to go to sleep outside, so she got up to put them all to bed. “Are you coming,” she asked Ralph.
“Pretty soon.  I think I’ll stay by the fire for a while.”
He was listening to the wind.
He was feeling the subtle shifting of the planet under his feet. He was smiling.
He looked straight up at the myriad stars that were visible between the trees. He was lost in the glory of it all. And maybe, he was hearing the angels singing, in a way that he could understand.
The fire burnt down. He sat there just open to it all for a while, then he got up and went in to join his family for the night.
And while they slept, the Universe tumbled and turned, and sang and sent out its long long waves forever.
