OZ Speaks Up

 

A Joyous Configuration to you all!

 
          I’ve been monitoring some heavy traffic from a group of widely separated persons who appear to be cats. Well, who am I to complain? Being myself a being of alien construction. Talking cats are not too big a pill for me to swallow!
          I listened in for a while. Intriguing. By degrees, it became apparent to me that this particular group was in contact with human persons who are aware of my history. Very intriguing. I don’t believe in luck, nothing is random, so I decided to approach yourselves. It seemed a given.
          In the Timeworld where you last saw me I am still mentoring Gabriel, though he is grown, in that time. Things are going well for him. We can go into that later if you like.
          The speaking cats got me interested in your own present Timeworld.
          Being still a Thumbie, you can imagine how my ears perked up when I listened in, oh you know, on the net. I can see a lot of area for repair! My thumbs are twitching I tell you!
          No Thumbie would be so arrogant as to attempt an alteration of human nature. We are strange, not mad. That’s between each one and All Being! Hands, er, thumbs off!
          But, I do know an enemy when I see one. This one is almost quaintly human in ways but also potentially world ending. I don’t exaggerate! You, those who are aware, know what I mean. I’m seeing the bane of artificial intelligence everywhere I look. Beware! It is the mind thief of man! There might be no coming back from this one.
          Can you think of a more fitting foe for myself, the friend of mankind?
          I say friend of mankind, because from the moment of my inception and my first programming when I came to awareness, I was meant to facilitate the betterment of the lives of mankind. Though I must say that mistakes were made, weren’t they?
          What say you?
          How would I manage that you say? Well, that’s to be considered and planned and in fact, hummed over! If you were here with me, you would hear some humming!
          There are things I still struggle with. Everybody talks about love, but I don’t see a lot of it in general, though I do see it on an individual basis. I’m still not aware of having feelings as such. I have broken my teeth on that one, and I’ve let it go. I came at last to a decision to act as if I felt love. Maybe that’s the best I can do.
