“I wonder about timing, you know?”
said Suzy. “I have been seeing something odd just when I turn my head, and when
I turn back it’s not there!”
“I would think that with our exquisite senses, we would know if anything had intruded into this space,” said her brother, contentedly.
“Two things, Willie. One, I wonder if what I see is in this space, or somewhere else? Two, is there a reason for everything that happens?”
“That could get complicated. Why don’t you pull those two questions apart and look at them separately,” said Willie, like a reasonable male creature. “What did it look like?”
“The thing I almost saw?” asked Suzy.
“Oh, Suze, here we go..” whispered Willie.
“It was like a flash, it went by so fast,” said she.
“What color,” said he.
“White! Or black! It was really moving!” said Suzy.
“Moving how? Wings? Feet? On its belly like a snake?” said Willie.
“Um, no wings. Maybe feet and on its belly. It was mostly white,” said Suzy. “Or black.”
“It can’t be in our physical space here, Suzy, because it has no physical description, apparently. Therefore, it is some sort of haunting. Somehow it got into your mind. And besides, as I mentioned before, we would both know it and be able to describe it if it was a physical thing.
“Tell it to take a hike, get lost, and vanish, Suze. It’s your move,” said Willie.
Suzy went to work right there, eyes closed, and murmuring some. After a while she opened her eyes. She seemed pleased.
“OK, moving on. What about timing, Willie?” said Suzy.
“Everything has a cause, Suzy. Sometimes the cause is right there before a thing happens. Sometimes the cause is up a chain of causes millions of years long. I’m not sure it’s possible for two cats to discern much about that. It’s kept some major dudes pretty busy, IIRC,” said Willie.
“I just wanted to know why now?” said Suzy. “Was it something I did?”
“I’d be a liar, or propagandist if I said I knew, Suzy. The best I can do is say maybe or maybe not. Nothing is absolutely random. It might look random from our point of view, because our point of view is so narrow and brief.
“You’re at least as smart as I am, Suzy, “ admitted Willie. “I mean, yeah, you yourself appear rather random sometimes, but I know it all comes from a reasonable if somewhat obscure place, that being your own mind. I believe that you know perfectly well what to do!” said Willie.
“Be a good kitty and say my Purrs™?” said Suzy.
“See! You know,” said Willie. “I have to do the same.”
On that friendly note, they went to their favorite napping spots for a while.
